California is Entirely Drought-Free for the First Instance in 25 Years.
Following 25 long years, no portion of the state is enduring water scarcity. This milestone comes on the heels of grueling years marked by below-average rain that intensified blaze threats and challenged its massive agricultural sector.
A Chart Indicates Zero Drought
The latest assessment from the federal monitoring program showed that all of California is without drought or abnormal dryness. This shift came after weeks of above-normal rainfall that replenished water storage sites like Shasta and Oroville exceeding their historic averages.
“For anyone 25 or under you’ve always lived in a world where California has been in or emerging from drought,” remarked a local meteorologist.
Following Powerful Weather to Rainy Seasons
The journey here featured severe and lethal winter storms that battered the state in recent years, resulting in widespread flooding, power outages, and deaths. While those storms helped ease the drought, they fell short of ending it.
Until late December, areas like Modoc County were still classified as unusually parched. Substantial precipitation at the start of the new year finally erased those remaining dry spots.
The Vital Sierra Snow Presents a Challenge
But, hydrologists note that being out of drought is not the same as having no water worries. Latest data of the mountain snow accumulation indicate it is only about 70% of the typical level.
This frozen reservoir, which provides approximately 30% of the state's water supply as it thaws later in the year, is a key piece for future water availability. State experts have emphasized that it is too early to draw conclusions for the annual water supply.
“What we are observing right now is increased rainfall over snowfall,” commented a hydrology section chief. “Our hope is for the snow accumulation to increase by April 1st so that we’re nearer to normal.”
Even as the official status shows a clean slate, attention turns to sustaining this precious water balance for the rest of the year.
