The Tottenham defender found the net twice as Spurs extended their winning streak in away games in the top division and handed Everton their first defeat at their new home.

The Toffees were undefeated in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed their historic home behind after more than a century at the end of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven pounced on two occasions from corners in the first half to put their strong form at risk, and they were unable to mount a comeback before the midfielder - set up by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - nodded in a third to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender believed he had levelled the tally a short while after the defender's first goal, glancing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

Beto, in the meantime, failed to convert a number of chances, while Vicario made a succession of excellent stops to ensure the London club went five matches on the road unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the VAR stepped in, advising Craig Pawson to check the score on the screen and the referee decided that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in offside positions and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory elevates Thomas Frank's side up to third in the Premier League, five points off local foes and leaders the Gunners.

Everton remain 14th and are half a dozen points clear of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven excels in duties at each end of pitch

After a uninspiring weekday performance in the European competition against Monaco, where they managed a mere two shots on goal, the manager chose Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The new arrival was unable to make much of an impact before being replaced for the substitute after 60 minutes on the field, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the end.

Defender the Dutchman transformed into an attacking force to be feared.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball back across the face of goal for an unmarked Van de Ven to head home.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as skipper in the Argentine's unavailability - notched his second in first-half stoppage time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to nod in.

Van de Ven was just as outstanding in defensive duties, combining effectively with Kevin Danso as the pair dealt superbly with the 34 crosses sent their way by Everton.

The club's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the freshness may have worn off slightly and supporters headed to the exits after Sarr's final goal for Tottenham.

The end in Everton's unbeaten home run will not be a massive concern for the manager, but their striker situation are.

The forward and the other striker - the Everton's two established centre-forwards - had scored just a single goal combined before the weekend's outing.

And they were failed to contribute to that miserable record on a damp and dreary evening on Merseyside.

Beto's performance was epitomized when he opted to bicycle-kick a clear chance from close range, despite having room and time to readjust for a more conventional shot that would have challenged the keeper.

Barry, too, was unable to make an impact after coming on for Beto in the 65th minute.

It was not for a shortage of opportunity. Most of Everton's offensive moves came through the winger and Ndiaye, who tirelessly whipped dangerous crosses into the Spurs penalty area.

The Toffees: Moyes' men travel to Sunderland in the top flight on early November at 20:00 GMT.

Spurs: Spurs travel to Newcastle's ground on late October for their fourth-round Carabao Cup tie against Newcastle.
