The 2026 Formula 1 cars are designed to be more compact, agile and eco-conscious than this year.

Formula 1 has unveiled the official vocabulary that will be used to reference the advanced features of its revolutionary 2026 technical rules.

The sport is implementing what is arguably the most significant rules overhaul in its long history for the 2026 campaign, featuring new chassis and engine rules and the required adoption of 100% sustainable fuels.

The updated 1.6-litre V6 turbo hybrids, which retain the 1.6-litre V6 turbo hybrid, boast a greatly enhanced energy storage, requiring significant developments in the aero packages.

Throughout races, drivers will carefully oversee electrical energy – potentially on qualifying laps – to achieve the peak performance.

Wide-ranging research were carried out with a diverse audience, including new, casual and core fans, to understand which phrases would improve understanding of the central aspects of the upcoming rules.

The key objective was to make a set of intricate features of the sport as accessible as possible for the global fanbase.

Consequently, previous placeholder terms for specific components – such as "alphabetical mode names" for the moveable wings – have been phased out in favor of straightforward terms that succinctly convey the actual function of the system.

Exploring the New Tech

The FIA states that racers will have increased agency to choose strategies regarding power usage, energy recovery, and conservation.

The new regulations feature a set of functions that will be shown on TV overlays to improve the viewers' comprehension of the race battle.

  • Passing Mode: This takes over from the present overtaking aid. It provides a burst of extra electrical energy accessible when a driver is within one second the leading car to assist with an pass.
  • Power Mode: This is a manual power boost from the hybrid system that can be deployed for offensive or defensive moves. It grants the driver peak output at the activation of a control.

Both of these key functions will have to be managed carefully, as the available electrical charge is capped.

  • Adjustable Aero: Both the nose and rear wings move automatically – spreading on the long straight sections for minimal air resistance and increased velocity, and angling down in the turns for peak grip.
  • Recharge: Drivers can recharge the energy store with energy harvested under braking, or during partial power application at the conclusion of a straight or in sections where only limited engine output is used.

Car Design Evolution

The next-generation machines will be more compact and lighter relative to current models, with a distance between axles shortened by 200mm to 3,400mm, car width reduced by 100mm – down to 1,900mm – and the car weight lowered by 30kg.

Total aerodynamic grip is anticipated to be reduced by approximately a significant margin, although constructors will naturally regain performance as they develop their cars.

Drag has been cut by 40%. The vehicles will feature moveable wing elements – both wings will open on the straights to cut resistance and enhance velocity and revert into place for maximum cornering performance.

Tyres will keep 18-inch wheel rims, but the tyres themselves will be reduced in width, by a quarter-centimetre on the front and 30mm at the rear.

2026 Engine Regulations

The revised hybrid units will have an near-equal balance in energy output by the ICE and the ERS, increasing from about 20% battery contribution under present rules.

The ERS setup is simplified through the elimination of the complex turbo energy recovery device, the complicated and costly component that generated electricity from the exhaust turbo.

Every car on the grid will be mandated to operate on fully sustainable fuel, created from plant-based materials or synthetic industrial processes.
